My Five Senses

We spent two weeks exploring our five senses...

First was "touch".

We read Corduroy and described his corduroy overalls as "soft".

We had plenty of sensory experiences involving touch.

Water beads...

Slime... 

Lots of descriptive words were heard with this experience.

It feels collage...

Finger painting always provides a great sensory experience involving touch...

What's in the box? No peeking, touching only...

Sensory balloons...a matching game. It was a lot harder than you might think.

"Sound" was next...

First, we read Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

 

and talked about animal sounds.

We played a sound game, listening to different sounds and trying to tell what they are. 

We made our own musical instruments- guitars with rubber bands and boxes, tambourines with rice, beans, and popcorn kernels in paper plates, and maracas. We enjoyed playing in the rice and listening to the sound it made when scooping and pouring.

A taste test was the highlight of "Taste".

Blindfolded, we tasted a variety of things that were sweet, sour and bitter and then described what we tasted.

The Little Mouse, the Red, Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear

is always a favorite and fit in well with "taste"...

It was fun to fill up plates with our favorite foods, even if they were just pictures.

Smell came next. We read The Story of Ferdinand,

 

about a bull who spent his days sitting under a tree, smelling the flowers. 

We drew with scented markers, filled paper with scented stickers 

and made orange pomanders with cloves and oranges for a super sensory experience.

We listened to the song, "The Little Skunk's Hole" and talked about the smell of a skunk's spray.

Oh, I stuck my head
In the little skunk's hole
And the little skunk said,
"Well, bless my soul!
Take it out! Take it out!
Take it out! Remove it!"

Oh, I didn't take it out
And the little skunk said
"If you don't take it out,
You'll wish you had,
Take it out! Take it out!"
Pheew! I removed it!

Too late!

We played a matching game with smells. We matched the scents in smell jars to pictures on cards.

Ad you can tell by the pictures, some smells were pleasant and some, not so much... It was fun to describe the smells!

Last, but not least was "sight".

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was our book.

A "color lab" was set up so that we could experiment with colors and color mixing. Some of us mixed colors at our water table.

The "big kids" made "I See a Rainbow" books. We can read them all by ourselves!
