Dr. Seuss's ABC

In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, we celebrated by reading his books and participating in play activities centered around our favorites.

The ABC's were the topic of the day!
Our sensory bins were filled with ABC beads of all colors and sizes. Some of us used pipe cleaners to "string" the beads, great for eye-hand coordination.
We had floating letters in water play...
We sang the "ABC song" and also added our names to this Cookie Monster song from
Sesame Street...
C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me.
C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me.
C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me.
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C.
We replaced the word Cookie with our names and the "C" with the beginning letters of our names.

Collages of ABC's turned out bright and colorful.
As we placed the letters on our chosen color of paper, we talked about each letter (some of us chose numbers as well) and some words that start with that letter. This was a great activity for letter recognition and provided an opportunity to expand on our vocabulary as we thought of words that started with each letter.
A box with compartments labeled with the letters of the alphabet, was available for sorting a variety of objects according to the letter they start with. Some of us explored the objects in the box which was another great activity for expanding vocabulary and language enrichment.
