We started the week with strips of newsprint paper and starch to create a pinata. We tore the paper into strips and then we had to dip the strips in the starch and then place them on a big round balloon. Before decorating, we had to let it dry.
Taco Tuesday had us reading The Runaway Tortilla, a fun spin-off of "The Gingerbread Man",
creating taco collages,
and then to top it all off... a taco bar for lunch!
We love tacos!
In The Three Javelinas, we went on a "Three Little Pigs" adventure with some little southwestern pigs and a coyote.
When our pinata was dry, we used diluted glue and pieces of colored tissue paper to make our pinata bright and colorful.
We read Cactus Soup (a southwestern twist on "Stone Soup").
Maracas make such awesome music. We used plastic bottles to fill with colored chick peas- a great activity for eye-hand coordination and strengthening the pincer grasp used for writing later on.
We made sopapillas for our celebration.
After reading Chicks and Salsa,
We celebrated much like the animals in the book.
It was fiesta time!
We had fun playing "Chili Pepper".
Sitting in a circle, and with a chili pepper in hand, we chanted:
Chili pepper, chili pepper, one, two, three, chilipepper, chili pepper lands on me!"
We passed the chili pepper around in our circle. Whoever ended up with the chili pepper, had to sit in the middle (in the chili pot!:) until the next round.
Our fiesta wouldn't be complete without doing the Mexican Hat Dance. We kicked and jumped, walked and ran around the sombrero to the Mexican Hat Dance tune.
And then, the thing we'd been anticipating all week...
We took turns smacking the pinata as we counted in Spanish.
When we finally got it open, there were treats galore!
To top it all off, we had nachos for our fiesta lunch and our sopapillas for snack!
What a great celebration...
