All About Me!

This week was all about ME...

We read The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss.
There were different colors of footprints on the floor. "Left foot, right foot, feet, feet, feet..." We stepped on them and jumped on them as we called out the colors.
Painting our feet and painting with them proved to be quite a sensory experience...
We had so much fun it was hard to stop. ..."Oh, how many feet we meet!"

Inside parts of the human body filled a sensory tub. We had fun exploring the different parts. In fact, it topped the list as a favorite activity of the week!

"Kidney" beans were the filler material. A variety of "x's" and "y's" represented x and y chromosomes. For each "x", there was a "y" to match. It was fun looking for "x" and "y" matches. We had tubes which represented the small intestine and large intestine and a balloon filled with water was the "bladder". A balloon filled with beads was the "stomach" and a short straw was the "esophagus". Bigger red and blue straws represented "arteries and veins" with a little pink heart added to the mix. The "lungs" were two balloons blown up with air and tied together. "Bones" from a skeleton model were dispersed throughout the tub. There were googley "eyes" and a model of a skull with "teeth" and a "jaw" that moved. We had a blast sorting through all of the body parts with tweezers.
We read Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb by Al Perkins,
fingerpainted and printed our handprints on paper as we counted our fingers.
Singing "Where is Thumbkin?" seemed to fit in perfectly with this activity!
We read the book, The Shape of Me and Other Stuff by Dr. Seuss.
Then, we each laid down on a piece of paper so that our body shapes could be traced.
Next, we used markers to decorate them. Some of us even added facial features, hair and we painted our fingernails and toenails.
In the words of Dr. Seuss-
"Of all the shapes we MIGHT have been... I say, 'HOORAY for the shapes we're in!'"
A graph on the wall shows how tall we each are. We compared our heights to each other's using the words like shortest, tallest, smallest and biggest. We also compared our heights to how tall we were last year. We all grew at least 3 inches!
Standing on a scale, we were able to see how much we weigh.
WOW! We are all getting so big!

We read the book, I Like Me by Nancy Carlson.
Then we looked in a mirror to see our special characteristics- the color of our eyes, our hair, the shape of our nose and mouth. We opened our mouths and counted our teeth. We listened to the song, "I Am Special" by Thomas Moore.
We especially like our smiles!
Practice makes perfect. We brushed pretend teeth
and read The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss.
Pictures of each us were used to play a matching game. We also used manipulative letters to practice spelling our names over and over again.
"I Spy" is one of our very favorite games to play. We love to take out the books and "spy" things and challenge others to find them. This week, we played, "I Spy Mr. Body". We had a body shape filled with lots of different body parts. We took turns "spying" body parts of all kinds.
We used our body parts to do the "Hokey Pokey"!
That's what it's all about!
