Water Wonders August 8-12 2011

Oh, the wonders of water!

We had a water lab where we could explore the properties of water. We had colored water in the primary colors- red, yellow and blue. We made some discoveries as we mixed them together.

We read The Bubble Factory by Tomie dePaola and bubbles were added to our lab. We tried to make wish bubbles just like the twins in the book.

Outside, we continued our explorations. We filled up the wading pool with water and added bubbles. It was like a giant bathtub! It reminded us of this poem by Shel Silverstein:

Too Many Kids in this Tub
There's too many kids in this tub
There's too many elbows to scrub
I just washed a behind that I'm sure wasn't mine
There's too many kids in this tub.

We also had a car wash. We lined up the cars and trucks from the sandbox and gave them a good cleaning!
We read No More Water in the Tub! by Tedd Arnold. It's about a little boy's adventure in the bathtub. Using our imaginations, bathtime will never be the same again!
We played a game in our play yard called "Sink or Float". We filled a tub with water. We gathered up some items from inside and around the yard. Next, we took turns predicting whether the items would sink or float. Some things really surprised us! We read Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen. We made a prediction as to who would sink the boat. What a surprise!
We read a book by Jim LaMarche about a little boy's adventure on a raft and then we turned a table upside down to make a raft of our own. We used our imaginations to go on an adventure of our own.

We used water based markers to draw on some filter paper. We used eye droppers to dribble water over the colors to watch them separate and run. Red and yellow separated from the orange. Blue and yellow separated from the green. The black was best of all- every color of the rainbow separated from it!
We headed over to Bear Creek Lake Park to play at the beach and in the water. We made dams and rivers and watched as the water flowed through the rivers.

Oh, the wonders of water...
