Ladybug Lore July 25-29 2011

Early Monday morning, we released about
1,500 ladybugs into our play yard.
That's when the fun began!

We spent the majority of the week outside- we caught them, observed them and released them back to the wild. The ladybugs crawled on our hands and up our arms. We talked about what they eat- aphids and other teeny tiny bugs, and how they're good for the garden.

We had lots of "tools" to use- magnifying glasses, nets, bug catchers, a special ladybug house, cameras and more. By looking up close, we discovered their three-part body- a head, thorax and abdomen. They have six legs and a hard shell which protects them from their enemies. It was fun to watch them spread their wings and fly away! We also noticed the differences in their colors. Some were red and some were more of an orange color. Some had lots of spots, some had only a few and we saw some with no spots at all!

Indoors, we had ladybugs on the floor. We followed the path, counting their spots as we went.

We played a game called "Ladybug Lineup". We had to roll the dice and cover the ladybug that had the corresponding number of spots on its back. Most of us just liked covering up the ladybugs with the chips.

Our favorite books of the week were The Very Lazy Ladybug by Isobel Finn and Jack Tickle and The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.
We topped off the week with a "Bug Scavenger Hunt" at Lair o' the Bear Open Space Park. We searched for:
  • a red bug
  • a green bug
  • a yellow bug
  • a BIG bug
  • a little bug
  • a noisy bug
  • a water bug
  • a bug with spots
  • a bug with wings
  • a bug's "house"
We found all of them and more!

As we searched, we sang (to the tune of "Goin' on a Lion Hunt"):
Going on a bug hunt
Gonna find a ______________ one
I'm not afraid,
I'm so brave!
Look!

We also sang,"The Ants Go Marching".

It was a beautiful day! We had so much fun!
