The Mitten

When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing. On by one, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in to warm up in the cold winter weather... Using felt puppets and a snow white mitten, we dramatized this Ukrainian folktale each of us taking on the role of one of the charming animals in the story.

Bear Snores On

Bear Snores On reminded us that some animals sleep all through the long, cold winter months... they hibernate. Or, as in the case of "Bear" in our book, they try to.

We played one of our favorite games-
"Grizzly Bear"!
One of us was the bear and the rest of us quietly sneaked up on "Bear" and then proceeded to wake him/her. Surprised by the rude awakening, "Bear" chased the rest of us back to the start
As we played, we sang:
Grizzly bear, oh grizzly bear
is sleeping in his/her cave.

Please be very quiet.
Very, very quiet.

If you wake him/her.
If you shake him/her.
He'll/She'll get very mad.

Hibernation Station

Hibernation Station starts our "Christmas Countdown" as we read and talk about what all the animals are doing this time of year. It's getting cold outside...

We had our own "Hibernation Station" set up in our dramatic play center.
Our wild rabbit friends, work hard searching for food. They seek shelter in underground dens they have lined with grass, straw and twigs to keep them warm.

Here is a bunny with ears so funny
(Make bunny ears with two fingers)
Here is a hole in the ground
(Use other hand to make a "hole", a fist turned so that the open part is on top)
When a noise he hears, he perks up his ears
(hands to ears as if listening)
And he jumps in the hole in the ground.
(Place bunny ears from one hand into "hole" in the other hand)

Raccoon friends climb into their soft bed in a hollow trunk to sleep until the cold days pass.

Bear friends cozy up in their caves for a long winter's nap. Our bears weren't quite ready for a nap:)

All aboard for the train from Hibernation Station! Woo! Woo!
